After ten years of farming experience in subtropical South Africa with citrus, avocados, litchis and guavas, Hughes moved on to manage Swaziland Ranches, a 4000 hectare farming operation of sugar and citrus. He concluded his 30 years of executive involvement in the fruit and sugar industries as MD of Swaziland Ranches and a Director of Tongaat-Hulett Sugar Ltd. Swaziland Ranches is one of the leading companies in the world in Employee and Product Safety. It has been a NOSA Five Star company for eleven years and became the first integrated farming operation worldwide to become ISO 9002 accredited. In 2000 he established his own consulting business.
Employed by Outspan International, the second largest exporter of fresh citrus in the world, von Broembsen, internationally recognised as a leader in the field of citrus technology, headed up the SA citrus industry’s technical division
Under his leadership and control were production and operations research, grower advisory services, environmental affairs, the world recognised citrus improvement programme and the industry quality management programme. In 2003 he left the position of Group Manager, Research and Development of Capespan Group Holdings, the successor company to Outspan, to establish himself as an independent consultant.
